Shooting this session with Mike Vallely and Mark Gonzales at the Brooklyn Banks in 2017 was an incredible experience. This session brought together two of the most influential figures in street skating at one of New York City’s most famous spots, creating a moment that felt both nostalgic and groundbreaking. This was the first time in decades that Mike and Gonz skated together, and having it happen at the Banks made it a milestone event. These two pioneers of street skating, both known for their innovation and raw creativity, represent the exact foundation of modern skate culture.

The Brooklyn Banks, designed by M. Paul Friedberg and constructed in 1972, has been a skateboarding destination since the mid-1980s. Located in Manhattan, not Brooklyn as the name suggests, the Banks became the epicenter of New York skate culture. Featuring granite ledges, brick wallrides, a nine-stair, and the infamous big 13-stair rail, the site has hosted decades of definitive sessions. Their styles couldn’t be more different, yet they shared the same raw approach that has defined their respective careers. This specific session was later featured in a Thrasher Magazine retrospective of the Brooklyn Banks, highlighting its historical significance to the culture.

This shot captures the energy and connection between two skaters who completely redefined street skating. This is the first time this image has been available as a color print, differing from the collaborative black-and-white version I previously released with Mike during my ten years working at Street Plant.
